His words earned Jayce another dirty look but he didn’t care, the sparkle in Scarlett’s eyes, whether she was annoyed or amused with him, was something he was beginning to look forward to and he was going to enjoy every second of it. The girl he’d fallen in love with all those years ago had changed, she wasn’t afraid to stand up for herself, didn’t hesitate to state her opinion, and he realized with a surge of affection, that he loved the grown-up version of Scarlett even more.

Time had done more than just give Scarlett a confidence he’d never seen before, her girlish figure had been replaced by the lush curves of a mature woman, and the animal inside him was desperate to have its fill of the bounty she offered. Watching the sway of her hips as she slowly walked toward the clearing, he let his mind wander for just a second, but soon found his body throbbing with need and reeled in his thoughts.

Patience was the only way forward, as hard as it was, he couldn’t push Scarlett, she had to come to him, but from her reaction to his teasing, he was making progress and he’d take that as a win. Forcing himself to put thoughts of Scarlett out of his mind so he could concentrate on the horses, he tore his eyes away from the tantalizing sight in front of him and began scanning the meadow for the four huge animals, hoping that they were all there.

Scarlett spotted them before he did, and let out a little gasp of relief, “They’re all there and they look fine,” she said, stopping at the edge of the clearing. “Let’s just wait here for a few minutes and see what they do.”

The four horses moved into a line, and for a second, he thought they were going to come to them, but instead, they stood, tails twitching, nostrils flaring, looking at them suspiciously. “I don’t think I’ve ever had a horse look at me like that,” he said. “They’re making me feel guilty, like I’ve done something to them.”

“Don’t take it personally,” Scarlett said, looking over at him. “They’ve been abused and once that happens, it can be very difficult to trust anyone, even people who aren’t trying to hurt you.”

The feeling that Scarlett wasn’t talking about just the horses settled over him, and he studied her for a second, unsure what to say, “Then we’ll have to go very slowly with them,” he finally said. “Give them time to learn to trust us again.”

She nodded her head, “Sometimes it takes a lot of patience,” she said. “It’s the wounds on the inside that take the longest to heal, the ones that no one can see or understand.”

It was impossible to miss the pain and anger in Scarlett’s eyes, but he knew deep down that he wasn’t the one who had caused it, and the animal inside him came to life. His protective instincts flared to life, forcing
